Shingobee Builders has been honored by Minnesota Shopping Center Association in its Shopping Center Tribute Awards for Retail Real Estate (STARR) Awards competition, for construction of the Holiday Stationstore #332 (Hiawatha Reconstruction) in Minneapolis, MN, and the Brausen Automotive Addition in Arden Hills, MN. Shingobee received the awards November 30, 2021, during the 2021 STARR Awards Ceremonies. Shingobee VP Dave deNeui, VP Kevin Werner, Project Manager Eric Munt, and other Shingobee representatives attended to accept the awards.

The Holiday Stationstore #332, which won in the New Construction Retail Single Tenant under 10,000 SF category, was reconstruction of a Holiday station at 46th and Hiawatha in Minneapolis that was destroyed during civil unrest in May 2020. The previous 1,000 square foot convenience store was replaced with a 3,900 square foot building, and a car wash was added to the small site. Due to rezoning requirements, the locations of buildings were reconfigured to place the new store adjacent to the street corner, with fuel pumps internal to the site.

The design achieves a high-quality architectural appearance, with stone piers, undulating skyline, rich natural stucco and brick tones, and extensive landscaping. The new construction, with its urban character and pedestrian orientation, has been a sign of hope after the tragic uprising in the neighborhood. The entire project, including design, city approvals for rezoning and Conditional Use Permits, demolition, and construction, was completed within 11 months of the riots.

The Brausen Family Automotive project won in two categories: Renovation/Remodel Interior Retail over 8,000 SF, and Renovation/Remodel Exterior Retail under 20,000 SF. When this family-owned business was seeking to expand their repair business, they decided to invest in their current location at Snelling and County Road E in Arden Hills. The existing convenience store and car wash were demolished and rebuilt, along with doubling the size of the service garage, which stayed open for business throughout construction. The service garage and its customer service area were redesigned for a more family-friendly atmosphere, and the new, up-to-date convenience store and fuel station were rebranded as a Holiday Stationstore. Before-and-after photos are shown below.
