Shingobee was the general contractor for a Holiday Stationstore project that won a STARR Award at Minnesota Shopping Center Association’s annual Shopping Center Tribute Awards for Retail Real Estate event, held on Tuesday, December 2. The Holiday Stationstore, located near the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport Terminal #2, was recognized in the New Construction: Retail under 10,000 Square Feet category. Over 345 members and guests attended the event to honor outstanding projects and extraordinary individuals in the retail and shopping center industry.
Shingobee has provided construction services for Holiday Stationstores for nearly 20 years, providing new construction, remodels, car washes, and signature buildings in over 80 locations throughout Minnesota and North Dakota.
The newest Twin Cities Holiday Stationstore is a reflection of its unique location along 34th Avenue South and Highway 494, at the entrance to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Designed to serve the needs of the community, including airport and cemetery guests and employees, this Holiday Stationstore is efficient in its use of a small footprint.
The site incorporates style elements of the adjacent airport, including historical and aeronautical photos inside the store. The design of the site also reflects its location at Fort Snelling, using the same type of stone fencing as Fort Snelling National Cemetery across the street, and incorporating historical signage about Fort Snelling in the patio facing the cemetery.
The Holiday Stationstore was also designed to sync with the priorities of the Metropolitan Airports Commission, Holiday’s landlord – it is LEED Silver qualifying, has a battery charging station for electric powered vehicles, a car wash using 80% reclaimed water, and was designed to be welcoming to pedestrians using the adjacent Metro Blue Line, as well as traditional vehicular customers.
Shingobee constructed the Stationstore from October to December of 2013, overcoming a number of construction challenges, including winter construction, the discovery of contaminated soil on the site, and the unexpected presence of an unmarked cable running through the site.
In all, many logistical, construction and design obstacles were overcome in order to develop this Holiday Stationstore. It is a very unique store for Holiday and reflects a great partnership with the Metropolitan Airports Commission. Architectural design was by Architectural Consortium LLC.
