According to NAWIC.org

“The focus of Women in Construction (WIC) Week is to highlight women as a viable component of the construction industry. WIC Week also provides an occasion for NAWIC’s thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.”

Women are a growing part of this industry, and Shingobee has a long history of women holding important roles, starting with its founding in 1980 by Gae Veit, a Native American woman who retired in 2007. In 2018, the company returned to its roots as a woman-led construction company when industry veteran and 14-year employee Nancy Samson became its new owner, president, and CEO.

Just last fall, Nancy Samson was honored with the Construction Woman of the Year award from the Associated Builders and Contractors MN/ND Chapter.  The award recognizes excellence in job performance, aggressive commitment to continuing education, demonstrated leadership in promoting a positive image for the construction industry, acting as a role model for women in the industry and the community, and participation in community or charitable activities.

It’s great that we have a week to highlight women in the construction industry! To learn more about this week and see some events happening in Minnesota, check out the following resources.
