Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at Woodbury Lakes, Woodbury, MN, was recognized in the New Construction: Retail over 25,000 SF category. The Cinema sets itself apart from typical movie theaters with a unique combination of premium movie viewing and dining experiences. The 43,000 square foot building houses nine theaters, a bar/restaurant, and full commercial kitchen. The building’s design evokes the Spanish Missionary style found in classic Texan region, with a contemporary twist and a hint of Midwestern vernacular. The main goal of the project was to create a unique and enticing experience for shoppers at Woodbury Lakes.

The Gardner School of Edina, MN, was recognized in the Redevelopment: Retail over 10,000 SF category. The Gardner School chose an under-utilized property with an aging industrial building that had been sparsely occupied for the last ten years as one of its expansion sites in the Twin Cities, and transformed it into a handsome, contemporary preschool / child care center. Creative solutions were required to accommodate the site’s flood plain requirements and flooding issues, the challenging interior demolition, and the extent of remodel required, to create the now-welcoming appearance of the building. Upscale finishes were added to the exterior of the building, giving the 1960’s-era industrial building a distinguished appearance, reflective of the quality child care that The Gardner School provides.
